Shoushi (essay, part 3),
By Bakour Karapetyan

Our group moved towards Hounot canyon from the Ancient cemetery. Our aim was the shootings of the caverns, included in the defense system of the canyon at the beginning of the 18th century. From those caverns, Shoushi Sghnakh, headed by commander Avan in autumn of 1726, fought for 8 days against 40000 army and won. As the teller, catholicos of Gandzasar, political leader of Artsakh liberation movement, Yesaji Hasan-Dgalalyan, writes: Turkish army “crossed the two-day way in one day”. More...

Open letter to the president of the USA, the co-chair country of the Minsk Group of OSCE, Mr. Barack Obama

H.E. Mr. Barack Obama Please, accept my sincere congratulations on your victory, and I greatly believe in the changes and in the foundation of justice. The political elite of the Republic of Armenia found itself in the diplomatic trap after the Karabakh-Azerbaijan war, so it acts as an opposite party with Azerbaijan in Minsk Group format or in other negotiations. However, the international society interprets this fact as if Armenia which is neighboring Azerbaijan, has occupied a part of Azerbaijan territory. Proceeding from this situation Azerbaijan appears as a claimer against the Armenia “aggression”. This is the very case where the restoration of the territorial integrity of the countries subjected to aggression, considers to be prior. This is the reason that Azerbaijan gets opportunity to make warlike announcements, to threaten Armenia with war, and to effect on the international opinion. As a result of the called situation, UN made non favorable decisions for Karabakh, and the diplomatic problems of the Armenian party proceeds. More...

Western Armenia: photography without retouch

A very interesting photo exhibition is opened in the National Museum-Institute of architecture called “Western Armenia from 1860 to 1914s”. The Charitable foundation “Shoushi”, whish gets assistance from the Ministry of Culture collected and represented the exhibits from various collections to the countrymen.
Bakour Karapetyan, the director of the fund got round apparently all the basic establishments where the photo scripts, also books and illustrations imprinting Western Armenia are gathered. As a result, one can see more than 200 photographs in the exhibition, which were divided by the administrative principal. Actually one can see the whole Western Armenian life with all its expressions in this volume for the first time. The latest photos were taken  in the prewar and pre genocide year; e.g. 1914, that is, all that we had lost and all our goods that they robed and destroyed were recorded; e.g. the territory, cities, villages, churches and people. The Western Armenian life was not too joyful and light-hearted under the Ottoman Turkey prevision; however, it developed and even prospered here and there from time to time. And the best proof is these photographs without any varnishing and retouch. You always catch yourself in the thought; which of them was saved after a couple of years…More...

Open Letter To the Prime Minister of Turkey Mr. Erdoghan

Mr. Prime Minister,
At the congress with the representatives of Diaspora of Azerbaijan and Turkey You declared: “Nagorno-Karabakh is our bleeding wound…”.
A question arises: what about Byzantium and Western Armenia, on the historical territories of which spread Turkey, which arose in the Mountainous Altai, and whose wounds are they? Have you ever thought about it? I would like to say, the wound of the Western Armenia, as is seen from the Istanbul incidents, is still bleeding.

The results of the first pan-Armenian referendum

The foundation sees the rebirth of Shoushi, which was the most important educational and cultural center for all Armenians of the 19th century, not only in the restoration of the historical and architectural environment of the old town, but also in the inclusion of all Armenians in this process. Every Armenian, wherever he or she lives, will participate in the process of restoration of Shoushi town, which is the only surviving and won back to Armenians town. More...

National Picture Gallery of Photography

Being born in the middle of the 19th century, photography played an important role in the development of civilization both as a document and as a unique branch of fine arts. From the 19th and 20th centuries we inherited in family photo-albums or in private collections, the photos of historical events, public or natural phenomenon, moments of everyday life and portraits. And very often they get spoilt because of bad conditions of storage and they take with them not only the memories of our ancestors, but also pages of our history and other important documents. Open letter
To the presidents of co-chairman countries of Minsk group, presidents of France, Russia and the USA, Mr. Shirac, Mr. Putin and Mr. Bush.

Dear presidents,
Serious threats are being created for the future of our region, which are connected with the upbringing of younger generation. What will be the future of the nations in our regions, will they be able to go on equal pace with the development of modern civilization or will they be again in captivity of inter-ethnic conflicts and wars? This all depends on the way how we bring up and teach our children. Will they be tolerant towards each other in the future or will they continue to fight against each other?

To the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan
Mr. Ilham Aliev

Mr. President,
On November 30, 2006, I sent to You a letter and my book “Celestial Nut” via the embassy of Azerbaijan in Moscow. But up to now I received neither the answer nor information. Did the book and the letter went through numerous bureaucratic obstacles?
In the book, Karabakh and Azeri teenagers as well as representatives of Russia, the USA, Georgia, China, Brazil, Palestine, Japan, Israel and of other countries take part in the game, understand and defend each other, become closer, mutually speak against the war started by the adults. More...

The conversation was held between the journalist Barkhatov and Robert Kocharian.
The conversation was recorded by Bakour Karapetyan, 22.10.1988, Stepanakert, Ghar-silk industrial complex.

Barkhatov: - How will the events develop? The army is a part of Moscow and it is an obstacle as well. Anyway, it will not assist.
R.Kocharyan: - Poor army… to be in such a situation. Every side wants to strengthen its positions. Such suspending situations lead to it. The army is equally bad for both sides. And the situation itself outgrows into a hostility towards the center, towards the army.

My book “Secrets of Gandzak (Kirovabad) and Northern Artsakh” published in Moscow in 1998 was sent together with a letter to Your father, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. I had irrefutable evidence that on the northern part of historical Artsakh, after the deportation of Armenians in 1988-1992, with the permission of Azerbaijan authorities, all the traces of Armenian cultural heritage, including thousands of graveside stones, khachkars with Armenian characters, churches, monasteries, are being destroyed. Taking into account that they are also the heritage common to all mankind culture, I asked not to allow any vandalism towards these values. More...

An 8 years old boy together with a huge out of terrestrial creature “Nut” in the hands appeared in the thick of the Azeri versus Nagorno-Karabakh war. These 2 fighting sides try to take away this almighty Celestial creature. What thrilling adventures happened to the boy with the Nut as well as to the youths from different countries – Azerbaijan, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, USA, Nagorno-Karabakh, Brazil, Japan, China, France and Germany… School-age children might read about it in the recently published book (in Moscow) by Bakour Karapetian “Celestial Nut” (Publishing House “Shoushi”, Russian variant). R.A.Zargaryan, Candidate of Historical Science, Counselor of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
Principles and Strategy of the regulation of Karabakh versus Azerbaijan Conflict

The final recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) is the shortest way for the regulation of Karabakh versus Azerbaijan conflict, as well as peace-building and stability in the region. The Karabakh problem is solved by the creation of independent Karabakh State, which is the main guarantee of security of Karabakh’s people and maintenance of its rights as well as stability and peace-building in the region. Karabakh state is established and this historical fact is recognized by many states in the world. The final recognition of the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic doesn’t breach the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and doesn’t threaten (endanger) its existence. The principle of territorial integrity is not acceptable to Azerbaijan by many international and legal frameworks. But the most important is that Nagorno-Karabakh de jure was never a part of Azerbaijan. More...

"Shoushi" (esse part 2),
Bakour Karapetyan

Before coming down the canyon, I passed the territory of the ancient cemetery. Gravestones, upturned, torn by the hammer stab, were covered by earth and they merely could show off the fascination of the ornaments and the poetry of the epitaph of 18-19th centuries. I remember that in the beginning of the 80s, I saw this cemetery standing, the evidence of which are my shootings. More...

Azokh Kave : Excavations from 2001-2005

Azokh cave, located in the district of Chadrut, was extensively excavated from the 1960s until the 1980s, and a hominid mandible of Homo heidelbergensis in association with fauna and Acheulian stone tools. This middle Pleistocene mandible, at that time, was the oldest hominid fossil in the Caucasus.
